Are there any good supplements or alternative methods for depression?

I have recently started a new perscription for Zoloft, so I cannot take St John’s Wort, but I was wondering what other supplements had a positive impact on depression and mood? Are there other things out there besides supplements I can try? Any answers would be appreciated! Thanks so much!

I have major depression and anxiety. Many forms of alternative therapy were not that helpful to me, but my case is very chronic and probably more treatment-resistant than yours. I am on abilify, lamictal, klonopin and recently stopped taking paxil.

As others have mentioned, exercise can be a very powerful antidepressant. I would rather give up my meds than give up my exercise routine, which I do 6-7 days per week.

There is a good deal of research on the positive effects of Omega-3 oils. If you are a vegetarian, flax seed oil is a good alterative. You can google "omega-3 foods" to find foods that are high in Omega-3. I don’t think there is any conflict between taking an antidepressant while taking Omega-3. One shrink suggested my taking Omega-3 oils while I was taking antidepressants.

Some researchers recommend SAM-e, but I and others I know found it to be very expensive and ineffectual.

Amino acids that may help depression include phenylalanine, tyrosine, GABA and theanine.

5-HTP, tryptophan and alpha lipoic acid might have some antidepressant qualities. The same can be said for folic acid and the B vitamins in general.

Since 5-HTP and tryptophan are precursors to serotonin, I would check with a doctor who knows about alternative medicine to find out if it is ok to take these supplements while on Zoloft.

If possible, try to find a doctor or other health professional who knows about natural remedies for depression.

Relaxation techniques, including medication, have helped me deal with depression.

Research suggests that the combination of psychotherapy plus meds is more effective than therapy alone or meds alone.

Finally, make sure you are seeing a psychiatrist, who knows much more about psych disorders and medications than a general practitioner. I wish you well.

I take Zoloft too and my doctor recently told me about this supplement that you can buy at any store that is like a multivitamin and it’s supposed to boost and enhance the effects of zoloft, safely. I can’t remember the name of it but I believe it’s at Wal-Mart in a bottle with a yellow label. Good luck! I’m going to pick up some soon, myself.

  7. I just found a page with the information you’re looking for. I’ve used St Johns before but have heard you cant take it with everything. The linked page lists the 7 best natural depression remedies.

  8. You might want to try herbs such as skullcap, wild lettuce, damiana, lavender, schisandra and siberian ginseng. I’ve used a combination of these in the past and found them to be good mood stabilisers. You can take them as a tea.

Eat a good balanced diet with plenty of greens and fish if you aren’t a vegetarian. Omega 3 and vitamin B complex supplements help nervous system function.

Meditation, yoga, dance and other exercise might be helpful.

Prayer can be helpful. God can help you live a better life if you want Him to help you. You can have a personal relationship with God by saying the prayer below. God is our Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. God loves us and sent us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can go to heaven if we know and follow Him. Forever means without end — time on and on without death. Forever is what happens after we die. Either we go to heaven and be with God forever, or we go to hell which is very bad and painful forever. The good people who are saved believers in Jesus Christ go to heaven. The bad people go to hell. We need to know and follow God in this world to get to heaven in the next world. We follow God by loving and obeying Him and loving others for Him. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is our bridge to God. Jesus died on the cross to cancel our sins. We need to accept Jesus into our life as our Lord and Savior forever to receive God’s blessing and forgiveness plus go to heaven to be with God forever after we die. This is about being a born-again Christian. Faith in God is a gift from God. You can pray for faith in God. Just speak out and ask God for the faith to believe in Him and to follow Him. Some people find faith in God when they realize the beauty in the world is made by God. Evolution can’t explain the world’s natural beauty, for example, the parks in the world, animals, flowers, peacocks, sunsets, butterflies, rainbows, etc. After you have your faith on, you can pray a sinner’s prayer to be a born-again Christian. This prayer is very important and should be said with a sincere heart and faith in God. This is the prayer: "Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for our sins. I have done the following sins (state these out) and I pray to discontinue these sins. I pray to receive Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever. In Jesus’ name, amen." I’m Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches too. You could try out a Christian church and also see about their weekly Bible study group to learn about God’s will for your life. You can pray to God about your daily life and have a Christian church pray for you.
