Is taking vitamin calcium supplement healthy for a 13 years old kid who is underweight?

He weights around 75 pounds and is 4’11…He hasn’t gone through puberty he took the supplement 500 mg vitamin d + calcium for 2 days and then he started coughing, then he blame it on the supplement pill makin him cough. Is it totally healthy for him even if it’s overdose? Should i take the pill away and let him drink milk only, would milk be enough?

  1. Doctors are now recommending 2000mg a day vitamin d for an average person (adult). And calcium can build up in deposit if overused, i have one on my leg…..but i just drank milk! Talk to your pediatrician or go to https://www.medhelp.org and ask in the pediatric community for free. (ask a doctor costs $$ on that site, but community has free docs…)

  2. Vitamin and calcium supplements should only be taken if there is proven, documented deficiency of a specific vitamin. If your child is underweight, then consulting a pediatrican would be a good option instead of self medicating him/her.

  3. If you are underweight you don solve this with calcium:better talk to a nutritionist about it.
They can advice you way better then all of us here.
