Does metabolism have any correlation with muscle mass?

Does someone with a lower muscle mass have a slower metabolism than someone with a higher muscle mass? Is there any relation between metabolism and muscle mass at all? I have a fast metabolism and my girlfriend claims it's because I have a lot of muscle. Is this true?

  1. Yup.

Muscles are what's known as 'active tissue', meaning they require upkeep. Your body uses energy (calories) in order to maintain them. Fat requires no maintenance. I have read that for every pound of muscle gained, a person will burn 50 more calories a day without even trying.

In other words, muscles have everything to do with metabolism.

yeah, the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn when doing any kind of intense training, or even just sitting on a*s.

Muscle creates more heat than fat, to create more heat you must burn more calories…so in a sense, yes.
