Terms You Need to Know When Choosing a Perfume

When you are choosing a perfume for yourself or your friends, you often come across terms like EDP, EDT, base notes on the package description. Do you know what do these terms mean? These are specific terms used to describe the characteristic of perfumes. Knowing the meaning of these terms help you decide which perfume to buy!

What is a perfume? It is actually a mixture of fragrant essence oil and solvents (usually ethanol). A typical perfume contains around 15 to 30 percent of the fragrant essence oil known as parfum. The remaining 70 to 85 percent is mainly ethanol or other solvents. Different perfumes are able to last for different length of time and a typical one lasts for around 5 to 7 hours. Parfum is expensive especially if it is a natural one and that is the part you spend most of your money on a perfume.

EDP is the abbreviation of Eau De Parfum. When you see these words on the package of a perfume, it means the perfume contains 10 to 15 percent of perfume and more than 80 percent of alcohol. The strength of scents is average and can last for around 5 hours. EDP perfumes are often priced at above average prices.

The other common term is EDT or Eau de toilette. The parfum or fragrant essence oil content of EDT perfume is lower, at around 5 to 10 percent, compared to EDP perfume. Because of this reason, EDT perfumes last for a short time (around 3 hours) and are sold at a lower price compared to EDP perfumes. As the scent of EDT perfume is usually lighter, it is suitable for daytime wear.

Other than terms describing the parfum content, there are three terms describing emerges of perfume scents. Basically, the smelling of perfume is divided into three stages. With a spray of the perfume, the first scent that you smell is the top notes. Though the top note gives you a first impression, it dissipates quickly.

Middle note is the scent that follows the top note. Middle note is also known as heart note because it is the main scent of a perfume. This is the scent that stays on you and your clothes for around 4 to 5 hours.

Base notes bring depth and solidity to a perfume. The typical scents are rich and deep. Base notes are the slowest to perceive after application but last for the longest time. Common base note includes woods, amber and musk. The smell of base note is not strong but it serves as the purpose of facilitating the spreading of middle note.
