Ear Candling – The Great Debate

There has been great debate over recent years over the benefits and dangers of using Ear Candles. Coupled with this discussion is the background and history of how it all began with claims that ear candling dates back many centuries. Of course if the internet had been around a hundred years ago then these stories would be much easier to relate to and there would substantial more evidence.

You may have read of the different historical claims portraying ancient Greeks, Egyptians and the Chinese as having used ear candles for many centuries although the precise way that ear candles were used is not identical to how we know it today. Even living folk today pass down stories of how parents and families experienced ear candling. From simple blowing of smoke into the ear drum using cone shaped material to crude wrapping of newspaper for effect. We cannot deny that the experimental nature of humans would have certainly tried different devices in an effort to heal without the advancement of modern day medicine. Whilst we now have common cures and medicines to heal certain ailments a therapy such as ear candling probably evolved as an attempt to heal such ailments as sinus, tinnitus or general ear cleansing.

Eastern medicine is still of the belief that the meridian point of the ear canal is the most important when assisting with the body’s innate ability to heal naturally. This centres around the belief that the transfer of heat and warmth can assist in finding the part of the body that needs to heal. Again this is understandable particularly when you look at even current habits of eastern culture. The Chinese daily only drink warm water from a flask believing that the consumption of cold water is bad for the stomach.

Human nature will always debate questionable practices and is certain that the same arguments and discussions will be heard in a hundred years from now. The popular use of ear candles today will no doubt form extensive evidence and viewpoints for future generations. It is well known that there is no real hard scientific evidence to suggest that ear candles can be of real benefit and it would false to make such claims.

This is the centre of wild debate today over the medical evidence. But quite frankly, whilst there are many naive individuals who accept the perceived benefits of ear candles there are equally thousands of individuals who understand the argument, accept the lack of medical evidence, but are still willing to experiment and have their own reasons or beliefs for using ear candles.

With any alternative therapy and one that lacks scientific evidence there is always the risk of harm ad the unknown. This is why ear candling should always be experienced in the right environment with a partner or friend. Try to ignore the glossy marketing, read the instructions carefully and if in any doubt then refer any concerns to your medical practitioner but of course when it comes to ear candles their answer will be blatantly obvious. Maybe your own conclusions can be drawn if you are comfortable with the procedure.

There are lots of reputable brands of Ear Candles who do not make wild claims. Ear Candling can be safe provided you read safety instructions carefully.
