Looking after your gemstones

You need to care for gemstones properly if you want to preserve their energy and maintain their appearance. To prevent conflicting energies from building up, you need to cleanse them regularly. This will ensure their therapeutic qualities don’t deteriorate.

As well as cleansing your gemstones, there are also certain things you should avoid. This includes storing gemstones near items that like TVs, computers and stereos, as they emit strong electromagnetic fields. X-Rays can also disrupt your gemstones’ energy, as can chlorinated swimming pools, cigarette smoke and synthetic perfume.

When it comes to cleansing, different methods suit different kinds of gemstones.

The most simple method is rinsing in water. You should do this 2-3 times a week, for 60 seconds at a time, alternating between hot and cold water as you rinse. You can also use a small amount of mild, natural soap every 3-4 weeks – this will remove oils from the surface of your gems. With gems such as malachite, indigo and Mother of Pearl, rinsing should be avoided, as it will cause them to dull.

Another method of cleansing is a salt bed, where you lay gemstones in a bowl filled with around half an inch of salt and leave them there overnight. This should be done 2-3 times a week, and the salt should be replaced fortnightly. If you are cleaning ocean stones such as coral, sea salt should be used instead of table salt. You can also soak them in a solution made with 2 teaspoons of sea salt per half-cup of cool water. Gems should be rinsed and dried with a clean cloth afterwards.

Plants are another excellent way of rejuvenating your gemstones. If they are strung on a necklace, you can wrap this around the base of a houseplant or drape it over the branches. This should also be done 2-3 times a week.

The therapeutic properties of gemstones can also be revitalised with exposure to sunshine. Give them a ‘sun bath’ every 1-2 weeks by rinsing them (unless sensitive to water) and then laying them in direct sunlight for up to 20 minutes. Ideally, they should be laid on earth, grass, or the branches of a plant. You can also place gemstones on the grass during rainfall for a deep cleanse.
