Who is a CNA

A certified nursing assistant is also known as a CNA, whose work involves aiding sick or disabled people in nursing homes, with their regular activities. They also provide services in all types of hospitals and take care of the bedside needs of patients. However, they can only work under the guidance of Registered nurses. There are also many CNAs who work in the homes of elderly or sick people, as they are too old or sick to look after themselves.

Only people who have a certification for such jobs can perform the duties of a CNA, though nothing is compulsory. They are also known as Auxiliary Nurse, Nurses Aides, Patient Care Technicians in many countries, but are basically unlicensed assistive personnel. They are called as CNA in the US and their main work concerns helping sick people in nursing facilities. Those who possess a valid government certificate of this program can get jobs with more responsibility.

The CNA will be required to jobs like taking the temperature of the patient, checking his blood pressure, noting down his weight and measuring the pulse. He must also be alert to the vital signs of the patient and help the RN in report and document preparation. Additionally, he must help with the physical movement and ambulating of the patient if necessary and also in getting the blood and other samples for lab tests from the patient. He is also entrusted to help with the diet and other hygiene requirements of the patient.

The CNA certification is usually finished within a few months and together with this, the student must be able to communicate well. He must have a kind, tolerant and emphatic nature while dealing with patients. The subjects covered during the CNA course are to do with physiology, anatomy, nutrition and also other diseases related to mental health. He will also have to learn about bodily care, how to control infections and know to keep patient records.

Due to problems of liability and legality, the CNA must perform all the duties under the eye of the Registered Nurse. But, at the same time, he should be prepared to deal with emergencies, if he is called upon to do so. The CNA is a job which is very much in demand these days. This is particularly so due to a fast aging population, with the baby boomers becoming elderly citizens.
