The Process Of Fitting Dental Veneers Explained

As with any dental treatment, the first step when you are planning to have veneers fitted is to go for an initial consultation with the dentist so that they understand what your needs and concerns are. At this consultation the dentist will explain the procedure and give you some indication of cost.

Next, the teeth have to be made ready for the veneers to be fitted. In order to do this the dentist has to use a local anaesthetic first to numb the teeth and gums. After this, a special dental implement called a burr has to be used to remove a small part of each tooth. The front part of the tooth is shaved off and the amount removed is equal to the thickness of the veneer.

Now it is time to make a mould of the teeth so that the veneers can be specially made. A mould is taken using special dental putty on the teeth and the impression is sent to a dental laboratory where it is used to make an accurate model of your teeth. This allows the laboratory to make veneers that fit your teeth exactly, a process that lasts three weeks.

Some but not all dentists give you the opportunity to have temporary veneers fitted while you are waiting for the specially made ones to be made as it protects the newly prepared teeth. When the veneers come back from the laboratory you will need to go back to the dentist to have them permanently fitted. To see how they look, the dentist may just sit them on the teeth before fixing them permanently. Adjustments can then be made before fixing them.

Before the veneers are permanently fixed to the teeth using dental cement, the teeth are cleaned and the surface roughened up slightly to give a better surface for the cement to be fixed to. The veneers are cemented to the teeth and a special light is shined onto them. This helps to activate the cement so that the adhesion is permanent. To complete the process, the excess cement is trimmed away and the veneers are polished.
