It was found that this position would better distribute the astronauts weight during the forces of takeoff.

Astronauts now routinely use the zero gravity position as the standard for space travel. It was shown that this particular position minimized the stresses of gravity on the body during takeoff. It was better able to distribute the weight of the body than other positions try it.

It is common medical practice to elevate their part of the body to reduce swelling. This can also be accomplished by lying flat and elevating the body part as well.
