Fighting Airplane Germs

It can be done; the airplane cold can be fought and even prevented. It takes perseverance, commitment, the willingness to appear as a little bit OCD, and common sense. The plan itself is not to blame for the airplane cold; it is the simple circumstances of being 35,000 feet in the air. The humidity is almost nil up there, which means out nasal cavities dry up. The mucus, which is our body’s natural defence, dries up and leaves the perfect environment for germs to take root. So take heed, follow these simples steps for fighting airplane germs.

Drink lots of water. Sure, it means more trips to the bathroom but it also means preventing headaches, stomach problems, cramps, fatigue and overall dehydration. Use a saline nasal spray for directly keeping the nasal area moist. Avoid coffee, sugary drinks and alcohol – all of which exaggerate the dehydration process.

Wash your hands. You are sitting next to hundreds of people, of whom you do not know their level of hygiene. Wash your hands before and after using the washroom, before and after eating or drinking, and certainly after leaving the plane. Arm rests, door handles and overhead compartment handles are prime spots for germs to congregate, so wash your hands!

Brush your teeth. Yes, even in-flight. The purpose is three-fold: killing bacteria, hydration, and dental hygiene. By using an anti-bacterial mouthwash, any germs that may have made their way into your mouth will be quickly killed off. We already know keeping hydrated during a flight is important; brushing your teeth a few times will also help with that. Plus, won’t it be nice to get off the plane with fresh breathe?

Boost your immune system. Having a sound immune system will always help fight bugs, but adding an extra boost for a few days before flying will also help. If you aren’t already, consider taking vitamin supplements such as vitamin C, ginger root, and green tea. Stay away from junk food, cigarettes and alcohol as they impair the immune system.

Consider a face mask. If your immune system is already impaired because of an illness, then it may be a good idea to wear a face mask. Or if you just really want to prevent getting sick while on vacation, then slap one on and ignore the stares. It won’t prevent every germ, but it sure will help.

When there are hundreds of people closed up in one small space, air will be exchanged and germs will be present. It is just inevitable. So take charge, and carry out the few suggestions listed above. It will be worth the trouble in the end, when you do not get sick.
