Eating Healthy on the Go

Eating healthy food, even when you’re on the go, is the key to a long, healthy life. While it is super easy to grab a biscuit, burger, or taco when you’re running from place to place, or state to state, or country to country, it is also easy to eat healthy, as long as you know what to look for and what to avoid.

If you have the choice of what to eat, meaning you can pack your food and take it with you, it is a much better situation. You can pack healthy foods like hard-boiled eggs (in moderation), sliced vegetables, berries, citrus fruits, cut-up melon, whole grain crackers, raw nuts, and hummus to keep you going on a road trip. This also saves you money, since you won’t be buying food on the road. Just make sure you keep things properly refrigerated in your cooler, otherwise all that hard work has gone to waste.
If you don’t have a choice, meaning you’re traveling on a train or plane, you can pack a snack like nuts, a protein bar, or crackers to keep you going. Eat all the vegetables and fruits offered first, and skip anything cheesy, covered in gravy, or deep fried.

If you’re eating out in a restaurant, choose grilled or baked lean protein instead of fried or sauted. If you order a salad, skip the fatty dressings and the croutons and try a salad dressed in olive oil and lemon juice.

If you’re eating in a burger joint, go for a grilled chicken sandwich with a side of fruit, instead of fries. If you must eat a burger and fries, order a child’s portion and only eat what it takes to fill you up.

One of the most important things to remember when you’re traveling is to drink a lot of water. People tend to drink coffee and sodas to stay awake, but nothing will rejuvenate you like being properly hydrated. Make sure you have several bottles of water packed on a road trip, and on a plane, order water and skip the caffeine and the alcohol. Both are diuretics that dehydrate you and make you feel sluggish and unhealthy.

In addition to eating healthy food, make sure you stay as active as possible when traveling. If you’re driving, take a few minutes to walk when you stop for gas or to use the restroom. Stretch and bend, and get the blood flowing to your extremities. If you’re flying, make sure you stretch well before boarding, and at any layover and when you land. If you’re able, hit the fitness center or pool at your hotel to get the blood moving and to burn off some of the pent up energy that occurs when traveling. If you don’t have access to a fitness center, gym, or pool, walk around the city you’re visiting, but be safe and street-smart while doing so. If you’re totally unfamiliar with your surroundings, make a couple of trips up and down the stairs at the hotel, or around the parking lot.
