Eating for Good Health – What You Need to Know

A lot people today don’t really eat. This isn’t to say that they don’t put food into their mouths, but they don’t choose what to ingest.

Unlike our ancestors, we don’t have to hunt to be able to eat. The only thing we have to do is choose the kind of meat we like all laid out for us in grocery store freezers. Unlike our ancestors, we don’t have to pick berries and determine if these are poisonous or not before taking them in. Those that lived before us constantly worried about not having enough food to last them the whole winter while we have everything in full supply.

Modern technology and advanced methods of agriculture might have made food readily available for us but it is this same modernity that has led to poor nutritional choices. Food is readily packed in boxes, cans and plastic that it becomes a simple matter of opening and serving them.

While convenient, these are so lacking in nutrients that you are only giving your body nothing but preservatives, additives, sugars and calories. Despite the fact that vegetables, whole grains and lean meat can easily be bought, these still need to be prepared and cooked before they can be eaten.

For most of us who live a busy lifestyle, however, preparing these simply take too much time-a luxury which we do not have. In the end, it is much easier to open a box or have a microwave dinner which are both bereft of nutrients.

It takes discipline to eat healthy when you are surrounded by so many unhealthy but temptingly convenient food options. Be on the watch when you prepare your grocery list to the time you actually shop so that you only buy nutrient-filled foods. Make sure that you put fruits and veggies at the top of the list. Of course, put in lean meat, whole grains and fish there, too.

Sodas, pastries and sweets, however, should have no place in your grocery list. All they give your body are refined sugars and high-fructose corn syrup that add on the pounds, cause obesity and all sorts of cardiovascular disease. Also, hotdogs and bacon should be avoided at all costs because of their nitrite-content that has been linked to cancers and other degenerative diseases.

Resist the temptation to fry because it is convenient but try new ways of cooking food healthily. Learn to boil, steam and bake since these are definitely better ways of food preparation. Try eating fruits or veggies raw, juicing them or making them into smoothies-you’ll get more nutrients and enzymes this way.

This might seem ironic but with all the abundance around us, at no other time have we taken our diets for granted. Choose food wisely, cook them healthily and eat nutritiously. These should be our guiding principles in our quest to stay healthy and strong. It might be a little bit challenging at first but the reward of a fitter and stronger body will be worth all the effort.
