Just because someone holds an opinion that you think is outlandish, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your opinion is correct. The level of logical coherence inherent in an argument will tell you how clearly and carefully your adversary has thought their position through.
In the right context, a persuasive argument is one of the strongest instruments of social change, either at an individual level or at the level of an entire society. Sometimes people just need to be shown how a series of propositions lead logically to a conclusion. We may sometimes be resistant to changes in our world views, but we tend to understand that it is important to refine things constantly.
