The World of Dance Shoes

Dance shoes come in a plethora of different shapes, sizes and colours and there is no shortage in options as to what to order. There is huge availability of both Latin and ballroom shoes, each varying in style and function. When deciding on dance shoes, several things have to be taken into consideration such as the required heel height owing to personal choice or to requirement of the particular regulations.

Heel heights vary massively in ladies’ shoes, the highest of which belong to those in Latin dancing. Latin dance shoes can have heels up to typically 3 inches or even higher. Latin shoes tend to be higher and strappier than their ballroom equivalents simply because of the requirements and functionality of Latin dances.

Ballroom shoes, on the other hand, are more likely to be of a more classic style, with lower heel heights, a closed toe and more traditional colours such as white and flesh coloured. Many ballroom shoes are what we call court shoes, in which there are no straps and the shoe is closed-toe and an elegant heel of around 2″ to 2.5″.

Let us not forget, that it takes two to tango. Men, obviously, have a much more limited choice when it comes to ballroom and Latin shoes. Men’s dance shoes (as with men’s shoes in most walks of life) are for the most part black. The highest heel height is usually around a 2″ Cuban heel for Latin dance.

Dance shoes differ from normal shoes in several ways, none more evident than the fact that dance shoes have suede soles, something which would be very inappropriate for outdoor use but perfect for use on dance floors. The fact that ladies’ shoes have slim heels leads to a huge amount of pressure being applied on the floor. It is generally advised to use heel protectors to prevent damage to surfaces.
