The remedy to tossing and turning incessantly in bed at night

I write this at 2am in the morning as I just can’t sleep. I am also sure I’m not the only man who suffers from this type of restlessness.

In this modern digital age we are exposed to mobile and internet technology right around the clock. After work, in the evenings, we may watch TV yet still have a mobile or tablet device in our hands.

We perform this quick fire short attention time type of multi tasking where we read a tweet or Facebook message then look up and watch the TV. Then we read and reply to an e-mail. Then we send a text message or instant message at the same time we talk with our youngsters.

So by the time we get to bedtime we are still quite highly charged. And it continues. We lay down in bed. Some of us, for example myself, then pop in our earphones and hear some music on our iPhone. And we do it again. Off we go onto Twitter or Facebook or read our email.

And we arrive at 2 am still restless and awake. So what is the solution?

A great writer who writes a lot about writer’s block explains that the simplest way to overcome this is to take some action. He explains that action cures our fears.

This short attention span or poking into tiny insignificant stuff isn’t precisely work or leisure activity. It is a force or phenomena that’s essentially blocking us from doing real meaningless activities or work.

So my cure this morning was to flick open my portable computer and draft up this draft. When I complete the draft I’ll switch off the lights with the internal pride that I have finished a thing of worth that could potentially aid someone else.

Writing might not be your calling. It could be you switch off your phone and television and go play Lego with your youngsters and build something cool.

Or it might be that you get our your note book and pens and start creating dress designs, do some personality drawings or sketch out that new corporate web design for a client.

There’s a reason for that active mind of yours. It wants to be excited. It wants to be fed engaging, challenging and dangerous stuff that’s outwith your comfortable zone.

So when you feel like you like, start something, anything, right away. Your sense of achievement will satisfy your constant restlessness.

Molly Jamieson writes about corporate web design for Platonik. Their web site features many various corporate web design examples.
