It’s very popular and is known as skipping rope, jumping rope, or jump roping. The term jump rope can refer either to the rope itself used for the activity, or the game of jumping over this rope.

Today, jumping rope has caught on with adults as well. Adults are beginning to recognize the many health benefits of jumping rope. In fact, jumping rope helps cardiovascular health, increases strength and energy, helps osteoporosis, and helps to control type II diabetes and obesity.

Jump rope should be done with safe footwear on. You should always jump rope in athletic or aerobic shoes which fit well and which provide appropriate cushioning and support. You also need a good jump rope. These days there is a wide selection of fitness and speed ropes to choose from, you won’t have to use a child’s toy.

Adult jump ropes can be very weighty and have heavy handles. Don’t pick one that is so heavy it is going to be cumbersome or unwieldy. Many people find the heavier models and the ones with huge handles are unmanageable for actual jumping. Try one with a strong but lightweight rope, and foam grips. The foam grips are a great invention, since they keep the rope from flying out of your hands when your palms get sweaty.

There are new features and technologies being developed all the time. Manufacturers produce new styles of ropes fairly regularly. You can now choose a speed rope, a long rope, a double rope, and so on and in a variety of different styles and colors.

When you shop for a jump rope, style and color are second of course to fit. You need to find one that is the right length, based on your own height. Here is how.

To find the right length rope, try a rope out. Jump with it a few times. When you jump over it, it should just barely brush the ground. You don’t want a rope that hits the ground in front of you and then drags. That rope is too long. You also don’t want a rope that doesn’t touch the ground at all when you jump over it, that rope is too short.

Once you find the right rope and get to jumping you’ll find that you are having fun while you are getting all important and beneficial exercise.
