It’s very rare to catch a hydrogen car on the road but you may see one in a blue moon; especially in So Cal. Of course, when we hear the word “hydrogen” we either conjure up a massive explosion and an ever growing mushroom shaped cloud or we think of some futuristic rocket or automobile. The technology to power a car by hydrogen is actually not new; it has been around for many decades now. There are two type of hydrogen cars around; one which uses a fuel cell to power the engine and one where the engine derives its energy directly from the hydrogen. The fuel cell is a device which converts hydrogen to electricity. In contrast to regular cars these type of autos doesn’t put out any pollution at all.

It takes very rare materials to make the fuel cell and that is part of the reason why it’s so costly. It takes methane or fossil fuels to make fuel cells. It can also be a byproduct of such resources as wind, solar or nuclear.

Many consumers complain that the price of gas is high; well, it would cost around five times more to fuel a hydrogen car. Plus there are not enough hydrogen stations to support many drivers. California has the most stations with a grand total of thirteen.
