The Pesky Mosquito

There are more than 3,500 species of the mosquito and they have been around for more than 30 million years. The word mosquito derives from the Spanish and Portuguese word for little fly. They are comparable to crane flies and chironomid flies. Mosquitoes are a member of the Culicidae family, which means midge or gnat.

Who would have guessed that the London Underground is home to a unique species of mosquito? The species is called the London Underground mosquito and is considered to have evolved from Culex pipiens. The London Underground species has been called Culex pipiens molestus, because it is a tireless biter.
