Strategic Alliances for Medications Development to Treat Substance Use Disorder Program
The National Institutes of Health, frequently known as NIH, is a federal government agency that is operating within the United States Department of Health and Human Services that is largely answerable for all of the nation’s biomedical and health-related research studies.
The grants and programs of the NIH are all specially engineered to aid in the realization of its main agency mission which is to “seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that data to improve health, lengthen life, and scale back the burdens of sickness and disability.”
In accordance with this mission, the National Institutes of Health, in cooperation with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), has recently established the Strategic Alliances for Medications Development to Treat Substance Use Disorder Program whereby both agencies seek to support the development of substance abuse drugs by leveraging the strengths of two or more organizations toward a common target of medications development.
In addition, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is also meaning to request research grant applications that seek to work towards the discovery and development of efficient and safe medications for the treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), through the inception of tactical alliances and collaborations between researchers at for profit or non-profit organizations.
The organizers of the program reckon that through the leveraging of the strengths, the speed of grant-funded medications development for SUDs will be significantly accelerated. As a result, the organizers encourage the proposals to be submitted under this programme to focus at any point along the drug development continuum.
The initiative is also inspired by the fact that there is presently no FDA-approved medications for the treatment of cocaine, methamphetamine, or cannabis use disorders. To this regard, the NIH and NIDA hope that the outcome of the programme will accelerate medication development, foster collaborative ventures between entities such that each offers financial resources, in-kind resources, and/or expertise towards the development of safe and efficient medications for SUDs.
To support this programme, the NIH and NIDA are prepared to administer funds in the amount of $2,000,000 a year for a project that might last for up to 3 years.

a) Higher Education Institutions like Public and Private Institutions of Higher Education
b) Nonprofit Organizations
c) For-profit Organizations Such as Small Businesses
d) State Governments, County Governments, City or Township Governments, Special District Governments, and Indian/Native American Tribal Governments
e) Independent School Districts, Public Housing Authorities/Indian Housing Authorities, Native American Tribal Affiliations, and Faith-based or Community-based Organizations.
