Shopping Advice For Running Gear

One of favorite things about starting marathon training season is the chance to stock up on all kinds of new running gear. Not that running, or marathon training, necessitates any specific gear but it’s a real good excuse to part with the used and dusty and go shopping.

Marathon training has specific requirements due to the very fact that you can be out running for many hours. While training, you want to be as comfortable as possible and minimize any risk of injury, and the right gear can help with that.

So, starting with the ground up let’s look at some shopping advice for shoes. It’s important to pick a shoe that matches your running style. So if you have issues with pronation or supination you will need to select a shoe that properly controls foot roll.

Another important aspect of foot strike is where you land. Most runners will land on their heel, what we call a heel strike. Others will land on their forefoot or midfoot. This requires a special style of shoe for marathon training.

Seeming unimportant, but necessary for sure, are a marathon runners shorts. Here are two things to consider when buying shorts. First – do you need pockets built in to the rear of the short. They are there to carry energy gels and such. And second, do you need built in briefs.

Many athletes wear thigh length tights while training. They give you the added relief of allowing your legs to glide easily, should they rub together at various levels.

Next to your footwear, your shirt could be the second most important piece of clothing on. Do not run in cotton and go for one of the super light weight, quick dry blends. This will keep you comfortable for many miles.

Other optional gear that’s nice to have but not necessary are things like water carriers, fuel belts, and camelbaks. These all make marathon training easier, and make marathon runners happier, but are not necessary to successfully complete a marathon training schedule. Happy Running!
