The surgery involves a process called phacoemulsification and is conducted using an operating microscope. The surgeon makes a small incision near the cornea. An ultrasound probe is inserted and dissolves the lens using ultrasonic vibrations. The fragmented pieces of the cloudy lens are suctioned out and an artificial lens is placed in the eye. The type of lens used will be discussed with your GP beforehand. Often stitches are not required, but if needed the stitches will be very small.
