Yes you read right. Coconut Oil has been proven to be better than polyunsaturated oils. I really love this oil, and just to show you how good it is, I’ve put below the results of a coconut oil vs vegetable oil study:

In a 12-week long study, researchers evaluated the effects of coconut oil and soybean oil on the biochemical profiles and waist circumference on 40 obese women, aged 20-40. Fat around the internal organs, known as visceral fat, is the type of fat linked to heart disease, diabetes and stroke, among many other chronic diseases.

The groups were divided into 2, each group had 20 participants, the women received a daily supplement of 30ml (about two tablespoons) of either vegetable oil or coconut oil. They also followed a balanced low-calorie diet, and walked for 50 minutes per day. . The end result?

The coconut oil group presented:

Increased levels of HDL (good cholesterol) Decreased LDL/HDL ratio Reduced waist circumference/abdominal obesity

The soybean oil group presented:

Increased total cholesterol

Increased LDL (bad cholesterol)

Increased LDL/HDL ratio (higher risk of having a heart attack)

Decreased HDL (good cholesterol)

No reduction in waist circumference/abdominal obesity

This shows how much mis-information we are fed. I like to see myself as the messenger of fitness, I always inform my clients with any new information that I discover. And it is shocking that we have been advised to avoid beneficial saturated fats like coconut oil and replace it with the so-called healthier vegetable oils, this is outrageous because these oils are the ones that are actually increasing heart disease in this country.

Polyunsaturated fats tend to go rancid during cooking, when this happens, free radicals are created and cause havoc in your body, attacking cells and damaging DNA. Arterial plaque is the result of free radical damage in your blood vessels, this is a classic sign of cardiovascular and heart disease. Excess intake of polyunsaturated fats has also been linked to other disease and health problems like:

Increased chances of cancer Immune system dysfunction Liver and lung damage Damage to reproductive organs Digestive disorders Reduced learning ability Stunted growth Weight gain

Beware of these oils marketed as the healthier option (soybean especially) because these oils can cause all of the above. I also want to let you know that most saturated fats are bad for you, coconut oil and palm oil are the special ones.

Studies have also shown that pacific island (Hawaiian, New Zealand, Samoa) populations who get 30-60 percent of their total caloric intact from fully saturated coconut oil have all shown nearly non-existent rates of cardiovascular disease.

Coconut oil can be helpful for pregnant women, nursing mums, the elderly, those concerned about digestive health, athletes can also benefit from using coconut oil because it’s rich in lauric acid. It’s medium chain fatty acids, or triglycerides (MCTs) also impart a number of health benefits, including raising your body’s metabolism and fighting off viruses, bacteria and fungi. Coconut oil is also great for your thyroid.

Most of the conventional advice relating to coconut oil and cholesterol are false and misleading. Coconut oil has been repeatedly shown to be beneficial rather than detrimental on cholesterol levels. Coconut oil balances your thyroid and normalizes your cholesterol levels. Use organic coconut oil for all of your cooking needs. It is far superior to any other cooking oil and is loaded with health benefits.

Use organic butter (preferably made from raw milk) instead of margarines and vegetable oil spreads. Butter is a healthy whole food that has received an unwarranted bad rap. One of the best ways to burn fat is to eat natural fats like coconut oil. Coconut oil is a thermogenic (fat burner) – one of the best metabolism boosters nature has to offer, some of its benefits are, it helps boost the burning of calories and breakdown of unwanted fat. It stabalizes blood sugar levels effectively, especially between meals. It facilitates the burning of dietary fats.
