Winter In The Sands

It was a cold day in Iraq, can you accept it? Yes even Iraq has freezing days apparently. The things that you learn about a place while your there. No there was no fall, just hot dry desert, than like a vicious snake wrapping up its prey the cold set in. There was no alert, no period of warmness to let us know that winter was approaching, just seething cold out of nowhere. It was the middle of December now, and it was freezing out.

We were outside in the smoke pit as it started to rain. We could hear the heavy rain hit the roof, which was nothing more than a camouflaged tarp. It was near that time when the sun would set on the horizon and let me tell you honestly there is nothing more pleasant in this world than an Arabian twilight, especially when you don’t have much. All we have out here is each other, and like brothers back home were brothers here, and we like to fight each other constantly.

“About three more weeks left” my buddy said to me. “What are you gonna do when you get home?” I took another puff off my cigarette and blew it out into the open air. I know what these cigarettes are doing to me, but I don’t really care. Were still young, and were warriors, we all feel as though we can take on the world! “I don’t know yet” I reply to him, looking at him now “I guess I’m gonna get a whole lot of booze and see what that gets me. It’s been to long without a good cold beer.” He started nodding, and I knew thats exactly what he was thinking himself.

He asked me than what my plans were for when I got out of the Marines. “Not to sure” I replied back to him, “been doing some researching online for future jobs in the market place, and online marketing firms are growing rapidly.” He looked at me confused, and I knew, just as any brother understands his brother well what he was going to say next. “What in the world is an online marketing firm?” “Well” I said back, “I haven’t the slightest idea. I looked up what a few of them do, and they specialize in getting organizations higher in Google.” Still yet he looked confused. “Why on earth would you pay someone to get higher in Google?”

I told him basically I don’t know and we left it at that. Besides our smokes had finished, and it was time to head back to work. It was getting darker and darker out, and anytime now the sun would be completely gone from the horizon, and temperatures out here would dip just below freezing. We knew that any day now we would be back home, back in the world of never enough, and over sized portions. But it was our world, and our home.
