Why are Americans so obsessed with taking supplements and where are we going with this topic?

Studies have repeatedly proven that food is better than supplements and that in many cases supplements can actually be harmful. So WHY the obsession?

  1. Marketing.

    America is the most market driven society on earth. Everything in America is a business, including politics and religion.

    Traditionally, doctors made thier own medicine and lived like Hollywood actors. In a medical emergency they were superstars, but on a day to day basis, they were mostly unemployed.

    Marketing changed all this. It began with dentists. Unless one has naturally unhealthy gums and weak teeth, one need never visit a dentist their entire lives. I really believe all the talk of "cavities" is mostly self promoting fear mongering. It probably takes decades for the bacteria to eat down to the nerve in the tooth. What does happen is that it turns teeth black. Filling teeth is really a form of cosmetic surgery, but no dentist will probably ever admit it. Sadly, appearance is everything in America (we usually tend to elect the best looking necktie for president) so incomeptant morons with straight, white teeth become the CEO’s of large banks.

    America became the most medicated people on earth because it kept doctors permenantly employed, as it seemed to have worked so well with the dentists. What drove this was the thing most Americans would sell their soul for – convienience. Why eat lettuce and tuna fish for lunch when one can enjoy hamburgers, fries and a few anti-cholesterol pills? Why starve yourself half to death when some surgeon can remove half your stomach? Why be unhappy – take an anti-depressant! Frankly I’m waiting for an anti-recession pill to come out. Take one today and tomorrow you will find 100 dollars in the checking account. The pill costs 101 dollars, however.

  2. Because we are a society of eating things that aren’t fresh or healthy. So we seek to get those essential vitamins in order to supplement the bad things we eat.

    Also, we like to be at our peak all the time and vitamins are a way to do that without eating monstrous amounts of calories.
