Another popular candidate for hormesis is actually alcohol. It is common knowledge that drinking is quite harmful physically, especially when taken in large quantities. But many contest that when consumed occasionally and not in excess, there can be beneficial properties, although there has naturally been some dispute over this.

A fairly recently discovered application involves mallard eggs of all things, and a certain neurotoxin called methyl mercury. When applied to the eggs, it actually improves the rate of hatching. Again, hormesis proves that toxins in small doses can improve biological processes.

This even has some applications as an anti-aging technique. After all, every cell in the body is hardwired for survival. By exposing the somewhat more sluggish cells to harmful environs, they are forced to perform in such a manner that only much younger organisms generally experience.

Hormetic effects are a great way to help the body reach its full potential, as has been proved by several very successful examples. Anything from exercise to a bit of casual drinking can in some way improve life.
