What To Do When Your Child Has A Tantrum
Children’s tantrums usually start within the first three years of their lives. We have all heard the expression the terrible two’s and this is where the saying originates from. By about two years old children want to express their frustrations and frequently do so but they cannot control these urges of frustration at such a young age.
As the children are still trying to master their language skills at this age it is very hard for them to let you know exactly what they are feeling. This is then misunderstood and we assume wrongly that they are just being naughty.
Normally as the children get older and their language skills get better then we tend to see a decrease in the tantrums. Sometimes though there are still children that have tantrums at an older age.
These tantrums in the older children are just a way for them to get your undivided attention and get their own way. If by having these tantrums you give in to their demands then they are going to carry on using them to get what they want. This is because they will associate tantrums with getting whatever it is that they want, incorrectly of course. But this will happen over and over again as a result of you giving in to them.
No matter where you are the best thing that you can do when your child starts to have their tantrum is just calmly walk away, as long as the child is not doing something to hurt themselves. After a while your child will stop their tantrum and look to see where you are as they do not like it when they are left alone.
This then is the ideal time to re-approach the child and see what the problem is. Doing this will make your child aware that being good can get the desired result and not throwing a tantrum.
It is imperative that you stay calm when your child is having a tantrum. If you react and shout back at them hen you will exacerbate the situation and inevitably make matters worse.
By showing your child that they get their rewards when they are good and not throwing tantrums then it will not be long before the tantrums will cease to be.
