What are some types of excercise that obese people can start with to gain muscle mass?

My friend (yes literally) is technically obese and she’s asked for some tips on excercising to gain muscle mass. I have no idea what to tell her cause I’m an annoying high-metabolism person who never works out. Any suggestions or good websites I can pass along or should I feed her to the dogs?

I don’t mean to be a jerk, but the previous answer is silly. More muscle = more efficient fat burning. Strength training literally helps you burn fat FASTER, so it’s not going to help to leave weight training out of the equation until you have "burned some fat already". Health and strength are the first concerns, not whether you will look "a little bigger" and most likely you won’t anyway.

I’d recommend a circuit training workout to begin with. This can be done at your own pace, works the whole body, and gives very fast results. Look especially at doing things that increase your balance and your core (abs/back) strength. Check out the website below for some suggestions, though if the person has not exercised before, she might be better off with a trainer to start with.

The other really great thing about circuit training, at least for me, is that it goes quickly and if you have no attention span (like me) it keeps you from getting bored with your workout. 🙂
