Vitamins

Vitamins are considered micro-nutrients, meaning the body needs them in small amounts compared to other nutrients such as water, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. However, don’t be fooled by the term “micro-nutrients” because without them key body processes would halt.

Vitamins are organic substances that are necessary for life and although the body is a powerful machine, one that is capable of doing all sorts of things by itself, the one thing it cannot do is make vitamins. Therefore, they must be obtained from food and vitamin supplements.

Vitamins do many things in the body including adjust metabolism, assist with growth and all kinds of normal functions we take for granted.

How often vitamins need to be taken depend on the type of vitamin. There are two kinds. Vitamin C and B Complex vitamins are water soluble, so they have to be replaced every day as they cannot be stored by the body. They wash out in urine. Vitamin A, D, E and K are fat soluble vitamins and they can be stored in the liver or in fatty tissue.

Vitamins are good for bodies, because they:

– Nutritional deficiencies can be caused by a lack of one or more vitamins.

-Vitamins regulate the metabolism and assist the biochemical processes that release energy from digested food.

– Vitamins are catalysts for enzymes and allow the activities of enzymes to occur.

– Mental acuity is assisted by vitamins.

– Vitamins help the body resist infections.

-Some vitamins ward off certain diseases such as cancer, while others are used for therapeutic effects.

– Healthy organs depend on vitamins.

-Vitamins enable your body to use other essential nutrients such as fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and minerals.

All the nutrients of the body work with each other to make the body function. So if you have a deficiency in just one vitamin, disaster can occur. Vitamins need enzymes to be activated. Fatty acids make minerals function.

For example, zinc cannot function without vitamin B6, nor can some enzymes be made without it. Here is another example, as important as vitamins are, vitamins cannot function and cannot be assimilated without the aid of minerals.

If you eat in a healthy manner, that is a good start, but you will still need vitamin supplements.

In fact, we agree with many alternative medicine physicians and other like-minded professionals that just taking a basic multivitamin and mineral supplement isn’t enough for optimal health in our chemically polluted and stress-filled world. Our foods simply lack nutritional value to keep up with our nutritional requirements. However, keep in mind that supplements are not a magic pill and, as such, eating a well balanced healthy diet is still essential.
