The Various Classifications of Perfume

Perfumes can be classified in many ways – from their concentration to their types of aromatic compounds that are incorporated. One classification that has been used since 1900 to classify the description of a perfume is based on their Olfactive families.

This can only be considered to be a preliminary standard since the classification of fragrances are not yet finalized because new fragrances or mixtures are emerging and also new methods arise.

Traditional Classification Since 1900 Single Floral – derived from a certain flower, for instance, a rose.

Floral Bouquet – derived from a mixture of different flowers.

Ambered or “Oriental” – combination of scents from ambergris, labdanum, vanilla, tonka bean, flowers, and woods aroma and accentuated with camphorous oils and incense resins.

Wood – this a scent derived from aromatic woody compounds such as sandalwood, agarwood and cedarwood, this is also accentuated by a camphorous smell.

Leather – manly scents derived from a mixture of tobacco, honey, and wood tars, giving that leather masculine aroma.

Chypre -named after a perfume by Francois Coty, this is a fusion of scents consisting mainly of oakmoss, patchouli, bergamot, labdanum.

Fougre – spearheaded by Houbigant’s Fougre Royale, this scent was created from lavender, coumarin, and oakmoss, giving a manly herbaceous and woody aroma.

Modern Classification Since 1945 This classification is the direct result of the modernization of the world and the dawn of technological advancement. As was mentioned, novel ways may arise and this is the new classification. Christian Dior perfume is a modern type of perfume.

Bright Floral – a wondrous mixture of the traditional Single Floral and Floral Bouquet scents.

Green – a more refreshing version of the Chypre type with the additions of crushed green leaf, distinct cut grass, and cucumber-like whiff.

Aquatic, Oceanic, or Ozonic – a popular aroma that consists of calone, a synthetic aromatic compound developed in 1996 that is accentuated with woody, oriental, and floral scents. This is the latest classification in the perfume history.

Citrus -this refreshing scent is mainly used for eau de colognes. This scent is commonly a mixture of lavender, orange, and lemon compounds.

Fruity – a lovely combination of scents derived from other fruits such as peach, mango, passion fruit.

Gourmand – an exquisite scent giving an intense aromatic impact. This scent consists of a rich blend of coumarin, tonka bean, vanilla, and other food flavors.
