The Emerging Trend Of House Call Doctors

It’s positively an emerging trend: doctor house calls are back.

There are companies emerging that seem to be making the “good old days” of physician house calls much more common than it has been in many years.

According to Premier House Call MD, a leading mover in bringing back physician house calls, the trend is also based on convenience and economics.

The concept of physicians making house calls dates back back to an era before HMOs, medical centers and outpatient surgery facilities.

Premier House Call MD points out that at-home visits offers insights not available during a 15-minute office visit. Doctors learn more about a patient’s lifestyle, eating habits, their ability to take medicine and whether or not they exercise.

They know that in their home, office or hotel, patients are much more relaxed and more comfortable and more willing to answer questions. You also learn a lot of things that they wouldn’t even consider telling a doctor in the office.

There are now about 4,000 doctors who make house calls in the United States, a number that is expected to continue to expand. A provision in the new Federal health care legislation is intended to encourage more doctors to make house calls by allowing them to share in any savings, if they can prove they reduced hospital use, improved quality care and left patients satisfied with their treatment.

The program will focus on the sickest and oldest patients. If physician-supervised home-visit teams were able to reduce the projected annual medical costs of their at-home patients by at least 5%, those savings would be split between the medical organizations and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which would implement the program. The health care reform law calls for the program to start in January 2012. Some key legislators want it to start earlier, which many pundits believe is no longer likely given the current political climate.

A representative for Premier House Call MD stated that their member physicians will perform physician house calls in most major metropolitan areas across the United States. Their physicians are equipped with the latest medical instruments and supplies. In addition to physician testing and treatment, and they offer different types of laboratory tests, as well as ultrasound and x-rays.
