The bloody truth related to Hemoglobin levels

The thick fluid that courses through our veins is a very important component to life without it, we would never live. Blood is very important because it delivers crucial nutrients and oxygen to the different cells of the body. One important component in our blood is hemoglobin, which can be found in the red blood cells.

Hemoglobin carries oxygen and brings it to every part of the body. It is also responsible for making blood red. Oxygen is a vital element for living things to survive. So it is only logical to maintain a stable hemoglobin level in order to have enough oxygen in the body. However, normal hemoglobin levels differ from person to person, factors like gender and age play a role in how much of hemoglobin is present in the body but ideally normal levels would be between 12 to 18mg/dl.

Small differences in hemoglobin levels can cause a lot of strain to the body and can also mean that your body would start to complain. Low hemoglobin levels usually mean that you have anemia and it’s likely caused by poor diet and blood diseases. So you are saying that having high hemoglobin levels would be better so that more oxygen can be used in the body. But that kind of thinking is wrong because elevate levels of hemoglobin would mean that your body is working overtime to compensate for the lack of oxygen in the body like certain lung diseases. It can also mean that you are at risk in developing diabetes if you hemoglobin A1c is high. But as they say prevention is better than cure and these things can be avoided.

If you are low in hemoglobin, eating foods rich in iron can greatly help in increasing your hemoglobin levels. Foods rich in iron are green leafy vegetables, organ meats like liver, fish, dried fruits like raisin and nuts. However, for worse cases of anemia, a blood transfusion and injections may be given by the doctor to fix the problem quickly.

But if you have too much of the red stuff in your body, there are a few things that can be done to correct it. Smoking should be stopped, not only can you correct elevated hemoglobin levels but you also avoid other disease like a heart attack. Drinking enough glasses of water also helps in lowering hemoglobin levels since dehydration does the opposite. If you live on elevated areas like mountain sides, your hemoglobin levels would most likely be high since these areas have low oxygen levels and in order to maximize such a limited supply more hemoglobin must be made. So to correct the problem, just transfer to a lower area which has more oxygen. But if your blood levels are normal, you can maintain a normal hemoglobin level just by following a healthy lifestyle and by donating blood which refreshes our blood supply.

It is very easy to know the how much hemoglobin is in your body, a simple blood test and small devices like a hemoglobinometer would do and with this information you can assess how healthy you really are or if not, maybe it’s time to go visit the doctor.
