Barefoot sandals are used to refer to toe rings and anklets. These pieces do not have a sole. They originated in South Asia and were designed for decoration and not protection.

Gladiator or Grecian sandals, use several straps. The interlaced straps wrap around the feet and ankles, holding them securely in place during use. Jelly sandals, sometimes called jellies, were modeled after fisherman footwear. They were popular at one time. Today they are mostly worn by women and girl and are made from soft plastic in bright colors. Other sandal types include: jipsin, patten, paduka and flip-flop.
