The Anesthesiologist Assistant Program Emphasizes Around The Medical Education

The M.H.Sc program at NSU is devoted towards the education of anesthesiologist assistants, the health treatment community, and for the treatment and safety of patients. This unique 27 month AA program consists of an intensive academic and didactic program which will prepare the student to operate inside the anesthesia care team.

The anesthesiologist assistant program will emphasize the clinical education using a state-or-the-art mock operating room with the anesthesia simulator, and hospital based clinical rotations.

The students will get an extensive clinical training experience which will consist of a minimum of 2500 clinical hours that encompass all areas of anesthesia care for the surgical patient. Upon completion of the course of study, students may have attained a Master of Health Science degree from Nova Southeastern University.

The first yr of study focuses on the foundations of anesthesia practice via classroom, mock operating room scenarios and studies, and laboratory work. Clinical experience throughout the first yr will improve as the year progress.

The senior year (semesters 5, 6, 7) will include clinical rotations assigned in two week and 4 week intervals. During the senior yr, clinical rotations are full time and involve all specialty areas in anesthesia, which includes common surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, genito-urinary surgical treatment, vascular surgery, cardiac surgical treatment, thoracic surgery, transplantation, and trauma.

Medical rotations include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and call – depending upon the rotation.

NSU’s M.H.Sc Anesthesiologist Assistant program will prepare the student for the nationwide certification examination that is administered by the Nationwide Board of Medical Examiners beneath the auspices of the Nationwide Commission for the Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants.

The certification process involves successfully finishing the Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants for initial certification; registration of continuing medical education credits each two years; and successful completion of the Examination for Continued Demonstration of Qualifications every six years.
