Susak Island In Croatia

Croatia is famous as a country with thousand islands. Each of those beautiful islands has their own stories. One of the special ones is definitely the Island Susak with its beautiful nature.

Susak is a small island located on the north Adriatic. It can be reached by ferry from the Islands Cres or Loinj. It is the remotest island of the Adriatic archipelago and a true natural wonder. Tourists, who visit Susak, are pleasantly surprised by its beauty.

Northeast side of the island is facing the Island Mali Loinj and southwest side is facing the open sea and Italy. Sailors will agree that Susak is unique. In the Mediterranean, there are no islands similar to Susak. It is geologically different from other islands because it is formed of sand.

The island is a geographical phenomenon and a protected cultural heritage. During the Austro-Hungarian rule, lighthouse was constructed on the highest peak of the island. It was automated a few years ago. Before that, it was driven by the weights. The lighthouse keeper had to cheer the weights twice a day. Although it is automated now, there is still a lighthouse keeper.

Susak is known for its sandy beaches and interesting folk costumes. As this is the island of vineyards and cane, there are no roads or cars present.

The islanders from Susak have their own dialect which cannot be understood even by the islanders from neighboring islands. A small number of people, only about two hundred, live on the island during the winter. The majority of islanders immigrated to America. During the winter, island is almost deserted, and during the summer there can be over 1500 people.

Sandy and rocky beaches surround the island. That is why Susak is referred to as a great place to go relax and spend peaceful holidays.

The village Susak is divided into two parts, the Upper Village and the Lower Village. The Upper Village is an older part of the village. There are ruins of a Benedictine monastery and renovated parish church of Saint Nicholas located. The Lower Village is modern part and it is rich with fresh water. It is close to the port. The distance between Upper and Lower Village is about hundred meters. They are connected by wriggly stone stairways which are going through the reeds.
