Sun Care for Hairs

Many people have a good sense on sun care and after sun care for their skin. They apply sun screen when they have outdoor activities. Actually, we need such sense for our hairs, too. After exposure to sunlight, hairs become weak, fragile, dull and inelastic. It is because sunlight takes away our natural sebum and moisture from Keratin.

Sunlight produces damages to your hairs as well when you swim. Under the UV radiations, a reaction similar to bleach happens in water. Therefore, you may notice your hairs become discolored and dry after swimming for some times. This reaction does not happen in swimming pool only. It happens when the humidity is high enough to trigger such reaction.

It is important that you take protective actions for your hairs before swimming. In order to reduce the damages from UV radiations, you should apply UV protective gel or conditioning products on your hairs. Salt and oxygen in swimming water may react with other substances and produce damages to your hairs. Therefore, it is important to wash your hairs completely for removing all the residues from chemicals and UV protective products.

Outdoor activities (other than swimming) pose great damages to your hairs. It is because your hairs are exposed to sunlight for a long time. Significant amount of sebum and moisture will be lost. You should always apply a thick layer of non-rinse conditioning products before going out. When these products are evaporated, you should re-apply in order to reduce moisture loss. When you arrive home, you should apply sebum or oil rich products such as olive oil to protect your hairs and scalp.

There are some physical protections that you are advised to take. These physical protections are easy to do and are inexpensive. Simply protect your hairs by wearing a hat or a head scarf or by bring a UV protective umbrella with you. In addition, you should pay attention to the time of your outdoor activities. You should avoid having extensive outdoor activities during 12noon to 3pm because the UV radiations are the strongest.

If you have just permed or colored your hairs, outdoor activities are not recommended within a week. Your hairs have already been damaged by the heat and chemicals during the treatment. Hair squamae are opened up. Such open-up of hair squamae may induce greater damages from UV radiations emitted by the sun.
