Stop Varicose Veins

I was a stewardess of a large airline company back in the days, exactly forty years ago and I loved doing it. People who are stewards in the airline are now called hostesses or flight attendants. I had a vast experience of airline travel, some hilarious, some not so-so, and even some are terrifying. Every experience is not the same when dealing with many people, that is the thrill being a stewardess. The work was very strenuous and there were times when our flights were on full capacity and we would serve a full meal to all of them like the flights from Arkansas to Tennessee. Folks, this is a thirty-minute flight and by the time we ascended, and leveled off, we had to descend and prepare for landing. Many times it happened when the plane landed on the runway, I was still along the aisle holding the food trays. The kind of occupation I had was very taxing on our time and body. The cabin’s surroundings was dry combined with its pressure and our constant standing and walking, our legs were mostly affected by it. We had to wear support stockings to minimize varicose veins that come with being a stewardess. I was able to perform well no matter how tiring it was but my legs were beat all the time after every flight. That was my only problem.

As the heart pumps blood through the arteries, it distributes oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body. Like arteries, veins are also tube-shaped vessels that carry blood. On the other hand, the vein’s inner walls are thinner and have valves that stop the blood from flowing back since it should flow on a one way direction. When there is more pressure put on the vein because the leaflet of the valves do not close properly, it allows the blood to flow back so the vein swells thus the result of varicose veins. Symptoms of varicose veins are distended veins, often bluish and lumpy looking in the legs accompanied by a dull ache, tired legs, swollen feet and ankles, weak leg muscles and leg cramps at night, eczema, leg sores, itching, leg cramps, bruising easily and sometimes the legs will feel heavy.

People who tend to sit, stand, cross their legs for long hours are prone to have varicose veins, even those who are extremely heavy and inactive. Varicose veins are likely to occur when a person has a family history of it, or is suffering from constipation, phlebitis, has a heart condition, ailment of the liver, and requires more Vitamin C and P.

Exercise your legs like sprinting, jogging, walking, and swimming. These can lessen the chances of getting varicose veins. In addition, manage your weight. Stay on your limit so as not to put too much pressure on your legs and feet. Eat foods that contain high fiber and less salt, if possible avoid salty foods. Wear clothes that just fit your size, enough for you to breathe in and out, not those body-hugging types. Should you need to sit for very long in your chair, do not cross your legs, and every 30 minutes, stand up and loosen yourself. Also, should you need to be up all the time, try to shift the weight of your body from one side to the other and vice versa every once in a while. For leg support, you can wear compression stockings, especially when you need to stand for prolonged hours. Blood pooling on the legs are compressed when the stockings are used, correcting the flow of the blood. In fact, I suppose my wearing of the compression stockings when I was a stewardess back then was the one that reduced my chances of having varicose veins.

Epsom salt baths would be another choice that seem to be effective. You can do it twice a week (as my common practice and I feel it is helping me). Massage oils with additional Vitamin E, Rosemary oil extract and Castor oil are what I rub over my legs too. The varicose veins I had did not worsen and even reduced its occurrences. I practice good eating habits supplemented with vitamin C and rutin (a bioflavonoid) and I regularly do my daily stretching exercises.

However, if your symptoms of varicose veins are severe, consult your health care provider for treatment options.
