Starting From Scratch With An Allergic Dog

If you think humans are the only ones who get allergies, you’re barking up the wrong tree. The widespread problem of dog allergies is evidenced by the fact that as much as 25% of dogs in the U.S. are allergic. Pets have problems with the same allergens as humans, and in a strange role reversal, can even be allergic to their owners. Atopic dermatitis has been named by authorities as the most prevalent allergic condition among dogs. Seven million U.S. dogs suffer from the condition-a severe, itchy skin disease that results in hypersensitivity to environmental allergens such as pollen, mold and dust mites.

The veterinarian can confirm if your dog has an allergy, but you should be able to recognize the signs by yourself.

Know the signs. Dogs that incessantly lick its body parts, i.e., paws and hindquarters, are sure signs of having an allergy attack. There will be an inflammation of the ears that will have a reddish hue. They will be shedding hair in the armpits, paws and groin and stains will be visible from the excessive licking.

There would be stains from the incessant licking and hair loss at the armpits, groin and the toes of the paws. Go visit your veterinarian. Atopic dermatitis is common among afflicted dogs but you should also be on the lookout for other allergy causing allergens like insect bites, food and medicines. You veterinarian should be able to diagnose the cause of your dog’s discomfort and prescribe the necessary medication. Consider treatment options. The usual treatment of atopic dermatitis is applying a skin cream that will block the allergic reaction that should relieve the itching sans the possible side effects of steroids. Veterinarians also use immunotherapy, or allergy shots, to decrease a pet’s sensitivity to a specific allergen.

Eliminate or minimize the causes. Keep your dog’s habitat free of allergens that can cause an allergy attack. Get an anti allergen bedding for your dog, and air the places where dust mites and molds can thrive; stay clear of tall grasses and weedy places; and don’t exercise your dog in the early morning during the flowering months when pollens are all over the place.
