Setting Goals With Basic Values

Setting goals is a skill that everyone who wishes to be successful should learn and master. Sadly, many people set up the wrong goals with the result that they will either abandon the goals because they aren’t achieving them, or because they just can’t get motivated enough.

It is therefore absolutely essential that the goals you set for yourself are aligned with your basic values.

What exactly are basic values?

Your basic values include anything you feel a passion toward, which you consider of great importance and that you deeply believe in. They reflect who you are and what you stand for. For instance, if you value honesty and fairness, you should definitely set goals that align with those values. You could set a goal to make money in a fair and honest way.

Taking the time to think about your basic values is an extremely important thing to do, as if you set goals that are not aligned with what you believe in, or stand for, will in a lack of motivation and a feeling that you are not doing the right thing.

Basically, if you believe in honesty but you decide to earn money doing something dishonest, you will probably regret doing so, and you will lose your motivation to go forward with your plans and be successful. In order to be successful, you must do something you love, and that’s why taking time to decide what is right for you is extremely important.

You should also consider whether your goals are challenging for you. If what you are doing is not enough to pull you out of your comfort zone, chances are that you will feel less driven. But, if your goals are unrealistic, you are likely to give up on them become they seem impossible to achieve.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can’t set your bar of expectations a bit higher than you can presently reach. Different people may see the same goal as either possible or impossible, depending on their individual perceptions. So the goals you set should be based on what you realistically believe you can achieve. This point brings to mind another consideration, since some people do things for the sake of others and not for themselves. Just to give you an example, many used to believe that flying was impossible and that no human could ever do it.

But the Wright brothers thought differently, and they invented the first real flying plane. If the Wright brothers had believed what others did, today we might be earthbound.

So, as you set your goals, make sure you honor what you enjoy doing and make sure that you are aligned with it and you believe you can make it. This way, you are set realistic goals that are custom-made for you, and you will exponentially increase your chances to become successful.
