New Year’s Health Resolutions

Each year people resolve to get much healthier. These resolutions usually consist of things like “I want to lose a lot of weight” or “from now on I’m only eating healthy foods.” Wanting to become as healthy as you can is admirable. The basic truth is that almost everyone needs to boost his or her health in some form or other. All the same, it is really easy to go overboard with regards to New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, most of the people lose their motivation by February or March because they try to undertake too much too quickly.

So how do you make the commitment to health and weight loss without going overboard? There are a few different strategies in play here. The first is usually to go seriously slowly and only make little and easily achievable goals. The alternative way of thinking says that it is a lot better to think in the long term and make blueprints for how to get there. If you need to improve your health, both approaches can help you get there. What’s more, once you think big and long term, you can quickly break that down into several smaller goals that you can reach consecutively. Consider the following suggestions.

If you’d like to lose 50lbs by 2012 that could be split into a somewhat more than four pounds per month or one pound per week. That’s right: just a little bit more than one pound weekly. That’s definitely possible! Just abstaining from soft drink must enable you to get there. Obviously just cutting out soda will not be enough to reach the fifty pounds lost goal, but it can help you build momentum as you learn ways to keep off the pounds you shed each week.

If animal rights are something that matter to you and you would like to become a vegan, don’t try to get there all at once. Your health and wellbeing will hurt and the withdrawals you face will make your cross over a lot harder to take and you will be less likely to stick to it in the long run. Instead, begin by eliminating one type of meat. Then, after a week or two, eliminate a different type of meat. After you’ve ceased feeding on all of the major kinds of meat, work on cutting out the dairy products. After you’ve worked through a dairy dependence, you may start working on eliminating all of the smaller things that have animal based ingredients (jello, for example, contains animal byproducts). When you do this you will allow yourself more time to learn what to look for on ingredients labels and what new foods you should eat to make up for the foods that you miss eating.

There are many ways to get healthy over the course of the year. New Year’s resolutions can be a good way to find commitment to get started on the work you need to do. Small goals that get met throughout the months will help you stay motivated past the time of year you usually give up the resolutions.
