Neck Pains

I have had a few neck injuries in the past, a whiplash from a wreck and an injury from believe it or not, a basketball at full speed to the back of the head. Both experiences were unpleasant, but everything has gotten better.

The spine is a flexible, vertical column of segmented bones, to which the skull, ribs and pelvic bones are attached. The adult spine consists of 26 vertebrae connected by cartilaginous disc and ligaments. The individual vertebrae named according to region and position are four – cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral. The cervical vertebrae in between the neck and head has seven segments.Surrounding and supporting the spine are ligaments, muscles, tendons and soft tissue.

Most cervical spine injuries are caused by a forceful blow that both spine and shoulders are compacted. Other causes are collisions that brutally yank the head back and forth. This type of injury where the head is whipped back and forth involves the muscles and ligaments rather than the skeleton and is commonly referred to as whiplash. One in five people injured in car accidents end up with this type of neck pain. Whiplash can cause damage as well to the intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles and nerve roots. Whiplash is usually caused by any motion similar to a rear-end collision in a motor vehicle, but may also happen in sports, and other sorts of car crashes.

If you ever experienced whiplash, then you realize how the pain immediately occurs after the accident. You are aware that hardness of the muscles, soreness of the shoulder, and back aches also occur. Other warning signs of whiplash are fainting(symptomatic of a concussion), throbbing of the head, crankiness, hard time ingesting food(involving esophagus and larynx), and numbness. Pains between the shoulder blades, in the shoulders, in one or both arms, exhaustion, ringing in the ears, eyesight troubles, poor attention span, lower hind pains and sleeping disorders are also symptoms of whiplash injury.

Here’s the good part, whiplash can be cured. Nearly all who got injured with whiplash got cured within two to four weeks. The healing process however relies on the victim itself and the level of injury obtained. Some remedial actions taken after obtaining whiplash are the placement of a neck collar, muscle pain medication, heat treatment, movement training and physical therapy. The cervical collar may be needed for two to three weeks, and for most patients the pain goes away in two to four weeks.Of course, good nutrition, adequate sleep and taking care not to re-injure the neck will speed the healing process.

If you suspect of having whiplash after a car crash, seek medical attention. Quite possibly, you’ll have to put on a neck collar for a few weeks, and be given the right medication and endurance until the injury is healed.
