Learning Healthy Anger Management Strategies

If you are looking into anger management strategies, there is a variety of them you can choose from. Any of the strategies available have a common goal – helping people cope with negative emotions. Anger, although a healthy and normal response to upsetting situations, it can be intense to the point of violence. If an individual engages in a behavior that’s either destructive or out of control, something needs to be done to bring the temperament back in check. A good dose of anger management can help a person lead a normal, productive life.

Taking some time to sort out things is a great strategy. Moving away from a situation or person that causes anger is like giving oneself a time-out. This could be as small as driving around somewhere, or even taking a walk on the beach. Playing sports or engaging in a physical activity also allows a person to use up the extra energy. Other possible time-out activities can be reading, listening to music, or adopting meditation and prayer. All of these are good activities to dispel anger.

Owning your anger is another way to manage the emotion. Although the anger is usually brought on by an irritating situation or a confrontation with another individual, the anger actually belongs to the troubled person. Only the person who’s experiencing the anger issues can control their outbursts. And of course, it is up to them to use strategies to cope with their anger when it begins to bubble up. When someone feels angry, they need to stop and analyze why they are angry, to understand if their anger is caused by hurt, jealousy, sadness or frustration.

Another strategy is to think back about past times when you got angry and try to come up with strategies for a new approach to a similar situation. Identifying what triggers anger might help the individual avoid those circumstances. The person might also use the information to create a whole new approach, and not just to stay away from situations.

And of course, another way to address the problem is to confront the person or situation that is causing the anger. Calmly approach a conversation with the other people involved in the situation. The angry person might come to realize their response is exaggerated in relation to a situation which could be a misunderstanding. Or, it is also possible for the person to confront the other people about their behaviors and ask them if they can make some changes to come to a compromise. It may be surprising what people would be willing to do to help the person who is attempting to deal with their problems with anger. Hopefully, everything will resolve in the end. And if things are going to stay the same, one can at least focus on accepting what can’t be fixed. Sometimes a person must simply accept the situations and people they cannot change and either deal with it or walk away.
