Kids Exercise Prevents Smoking

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Dr. Nora Volkow, kids exercise can determine whether or not a child will become a smoker when they become an adult. It’s amazing that something so simple can keep a life healthy in this way.

Exercise is all around beneficial for a child. It helps them maintain a healthy weight, it improves their mood, increases their grades, allows them to sleep better and builds their self-confidence. But exercises like playing sports, bicycling and playing games can also keep kids from choosing to smoke cigarettes.

The study done by Dr. Volkow observed kids and teens. Those who exercise on a daily basis were half as likely to smoke when they grew up. Volkow determined that the brain loves when the body is physically active. Exercise is addicting in a positive way and it causes the body to want more so it can feel better. These good feelings keep kids from choosing to smoke, as well as other harmful habits.

Kids who exercise also tend to have more self-confidence, so peer pressure doesn’t influence them as much. Living a healthy lifestyle also lessens cravings for unhealthy foods, keeping kids even healthier.

These discoveries are amazing and I fully support Dr. Volkow’s findings. It makes since that kids exercise promotes a healthy lifestyle, making unhealthy habits less desirable. When kids are involved in daily exercise, like with an exercise program, they also have less time to spend with those influences that could encourage them to start smoking.

Unfortunately, there are many kids now who are sedentary and don’t exercise every day. In fact, many of them rarely ever get exercise. Another important thing to consider is that kids mimic their parents. If parents don’t exercise and they smoke, the kids will much more likely follow in their footsteps. Be a good example for your kids and show them the importance of living a healthy life with exercise and without smoking.
