Information Regarding Water Test Kits

Water test kits are the term assigned to the group of products and procedures used to check the quality of water from a specific source. Overall, quality is related to biological, physical and chemical elements of the liquid itself. Quality parameters tend to vary based on many factors. These products are used to measure the state of the liquid, in comparison to the requirements.

Testing is done to evaluate the conditions of several sources. Wastewater quality tests involve analyzing the traits of the liquid before and after treatment has been enforced. The checking of ambient and environmental quality is a form of environmental monitoring. This type of testing is done to decide whether the source can sustain aquatic life or not.

The characteristics of a source before being treated for domestic consumption are covered under raw water quality. Generally tests such as turbidity are applied. Finished water quality has been treated at municipal water purification plants. Testing may be done to check quality for industrial uses such as manufacturing, cooling of equipment and laboratory use. Test methods that have been published by private research and international standards organizations; and the government for waste, drinking and ambient liquids are considered peer reviewed. These methods must be used in order to show complete compliance with regulations.

There are simple and complex measures that can be taken to assess quality. Simple measures can be done through initial inspection of the water. Simple measurements may include: Secchi disk depth, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, pH levels, oxygen reduction potential and conductivity. Complex measurements can be expensive to conduct. They are usually done within a laboratory setting where samples can be thoroughly examined.

Often times testing is performed after natural disasters or other emergencies have come. This is especially true after Tsunamis and earthquakes. The public having access to sanitation and drinkable fluids become a major priority during these times. Furthermore, the threat for disease outbreak is elevated because groups of people are living in close corridors, sometimes in poor conditions without proper sanitation.

Commercial and on-site test kits are available at a variety of facilities. These products are used at homes for consumption purposes, biological assessment processes and fish tanks. Portable testing kits are often used in emergency or disaster situations by agencies that offer aid and relief.

There are different policies in each country. In most cases, standards vary based on the source location and usage. Testing products can take measures for specific things, but usually monitor harness, chlorine, iron, copper, nitrate and pH. Individuals testing at home should know what they are testing for because many commercial products do not check for everything. Read more about: water test kits
