Important Health Tips for College Students

You owe it to yourself to do whatever is possible to maintain your health during your college years. This is an important period of your life and if you take care of your physical health, you will get the most out of your college experience. Here are four tips that can help you greatly in the next four years.

1. Get exercise on a daily basis. Hitting the books is a good strategy for academic success but you also need to take care of your body, so that you do not fall ill very often. Regular exercise either through sports or some other active pursuit will help you to stay fit. In most colleges you will be able to find gyms or fitness centers where you can exercise, work out or just take part in some sports. If you are not the athletic type, you still owe to yourself to be physically fit, and you can do it by using a bicycle, walking briskly or jogging on a regular basis.

2. Eat with Nutrition in Mind. You may be on your own when you are at college and can choose from a wide variety of foods. However, before you slip into a habit of eating fast foods and snacks, instead of balanced meals, do your best to maintain a routine of three square meals a day, starting with a solid breakfast. A diet that is unbalanced or poor in nutrients will ultimately result in illness during the course of the semester, and could even damage your health in the years ahead. So, even without your mom there to tell you to eat your vegetables, you should take control of your diet and eat the food that will keep your healthy during your college years.

3. Get Proper Sleep. You have heard of college students doing “all nighters,” taking coffee and other stimulants to study deep into the night. Well, that kind of routine can work once in a while but it is extremely unhealthy if it becomes a habit. When your body tells you that it is tired you should heed the signals and go to bed. If you need to gain some extra study time, then a better way to do it is to go to sleep early and get up and study in the wee hours of the morning when it is very quiet and your mind is fresh. Similarly, late night partying is good once in a while but not very healthy when done continually. So, be sensible about study, recreation and sleep and balance your activities so that you remain physically fit and mentally alert.

4. Avoid damaging substances. When you are at college you will have more freedom, but that freedom must be used wisely. One of the biggest challenges for a young adult is whether to use or avoid substances that are not healthy. Tobacco and alcohol may be legal (if you are of the right age) but they will not help you stay fit and healthy. You are investing a lot by going to college, so think about that investment and use your best discretion when it comes to taking substances that you know are not healthy.

Staying healthy while you are in college is not “rocket science” and if you pay attention to the four health tips mentioned above you will be able to get the most out of your college years.
