Want a more consistent pitch with your golf ball? What about getting solid hits with your 6 iron all the time? What about changes in your score? What can make you shoot 82 on one day, then 96 on another?

Unfortunately, hitting the golf ball solid more often does not always translate into lower, more consistent scores.

Ball striking and course management are the two aspects you have to consider if you want consistency on the golf course.

Having a key thought during the day will always help you play more consistent and manage the golf course better. Every time you go for a round of golf, select a single thought to focus on. Make sure to think about this thought the whole time you play. Think about this thought rather than reacting to your shots. You could use this same thought for weeks, months, or even for a whole season.

Ernie Els, a prominent PGA Tour player, thinks about tempo throughout his round and nothing else.

Other people think about mechanical swing thoughts like keeping your right knee flexed, making the club face a bit more square on top, or bringing in a bit more shoulder turn in a back swing.

Whatever you choose your swing thought to be, the important thing is that you don’t become reactive when you hit a fade into the woods. Having a key thought will make you proactive. Without it, you’ll end up trying to fix that slice. Instead of being reactive, it’s better to continue thinking about your swing thought. The one that allowed you to hit those great shots before.

Whatever your swing thought may be, decide what it is before you step on the first tee and use it throughout the round. This will help you be more consistent on the golf course.

So how do you increase the consistency of your ball striking? One trick is to maintain the angles of your body. Having consistency in your angles will help you have more solid shots. This would mean that your posture, hip flex, and the height of your chest stays the same throughout the whole swing.

What happens here is that you permit your club to bottom out on the same spot by maintaining your body angles. Make sure to maintain the height of your chest when you swing. Focusing on the height of your chest will make sure that you don’t end up standing up or dropping down during your swing. More consistent shots will result if you just maintain the height of your chest.

To bring this to a close, improving your consistency during your game of golf happens when you take note of these two points:

1. Committing to a single swing thought and a thought process starting on the first tee that will help you be proactive not reactive.

2. Maintain body angles, especially chest height, starting in the back swing and all the way through impact and into the follow through.
