If you’re trying to lose weight, you are probably eating a lot of home cooked meals. This is good, but sometimes what you really want to do is go out to eat, and have someone else do the cooking (and cleaning) for you. But, restaurant foods are often very high calories – how do you know what you can eat, and still lose weight? In this article, I will tell you some ways you can use to pick out restaurant meals that won’t cause you to gain a lot of weight.
Here is a rule of thumb for you: if a certain food tastes too good, it means it has been richly fried, and as such, not good for your health. Surprisingly enough, the raw vegetables and fruits, which usually taste awful, are the best foods for quick weight loss! Here are a few more tips:
1. Try going vegetarian: Vegetarian food is usually a lot healthier than you normally get at a restaurant, and if you are only eating vegetables, they will naturally have a lot fewer calories than most dishes. In particular, they are very unlikely to have been fried! If you are eating in a non-vegetarian restaurant, you need to be extra careful to pick low calorie dishes.
As an example, ordinary chicken meat which is served in most restaurants is usually laden with huge amounts of fat which is bad for you! Lean chicken meat, on the other hand, is good for you, but not all restaurants offer lean chicken meat as part of their menus. With vegetarian restaurants, you will be more often than not on the safe side!
2. Drop the salad dressing: Salad dressings are often very high in fat (due to their oil content), and have very little nutritional value. Salads on their own, on the other hand, are great – lots of essential nutrients, and very low calories. If you just leave off the salad dressing, you’ll instantly decrease your calorie intake by a huge amount. If you don’t want to leave them off completely, then at least ask for low-fat versions – any decent restaurant will be happy to comply.
3. Stay away from buffets: A lot of the foods you see at buffets are rich in calorie content. These foods are cooked in bulk with a large amount of oil, thereby making them unsuitable for those who are looking forward to shedding some pounds. If you really want to eat from buffets, make sure you steer clear of these fatty foods and choose the salads and other healthier alternatives instead! That way, you won’t accumulate an excessive amount of fat in your body!
4. Keep it bitesize: Pay attention to the amount of food on your plate. If it’s too much, then don’t eat it all! Remember, it’s better to keep to your diet – restaurant food is a lot higher in calories than what you cook at home, and the last thing you want to do is be regretting tomorrow how you ate too much today. If you don’t eat it all, you can just ask for a box to take home with you – waiters are used to this, and will be happy to wrap it up for you to take away.
As long as you use your discretion, there is nothing wrong with eating at a restaurant once in while. So go ahead and appease your tastebuds!
