How To Fix Our Health Care System
As host of “Answers for the Family” on LA Talk Radio, I interviewed Dr. Craig F. Beyer, about his groundbreaking book, “Heaven or Health: A Doctor’s Plan to save our Health & Health Care System.” This book changes the way we think about the American Health Care.
Our current health care system, according to Dr. Beyer, is not taking care of our national health. It is not living up to its promise. When it comes to choosing health care options, it even hurts the health of patients because it only pays for inferior treatment choices. Over time, too, it limits research into new technology. This short-sighted approach is destroying the American quality of life.
The current system costs much more than is necessary explained Dr. Beyer. Medicare and Medicaid increase taxes. Since insurance will only pay a small percentage of costs, it forces hospitals to mark up treatment and medication prices.
As an example, he recalled the case of a friend who recently had a medical procedure. This gentleman paid $25,000 for a one-night hospital stay. When Dr Beyer examined the bill from the hospital, the actual cost was probably closer to $3,000 worth of medical treatments.
Although well-intentioned, Obama care is not a viable alternative. It will increase administration costs and add to the bureaucratic entanglement. It will also drive private doctors out of business. The quality of health care will diminish even more because of poor service and many regulations. Only the politicians and the very wealthy will get good health care.
Dr. Beyer recommended that the first step was for Americans to become much more health conscious. They needed to improve their diet and exercise habits. The government only needed to provide health care for those who could not take care of themselves. The rest could fund their own medical care by opening up a tax-exempt personal health savings account.
