How to Find a Good Personal Trainer

If you’re looking for a personal trainer, there are some questions you will want to learn to ask. If you just hire the first one at the gym, you may be sorry later.

There are many things you will want to look for when seeking a personal trainer. One of them is the type of certifications they have. A brief online search will give you an idea of the variety of different certifications available; not all are created equal. You’ll probably want them to have one from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) in their arsenal. A degree in kinesiology is a good sign; it shows that they have a background in the science of human movement and muscle science.

Do your homework when you are looking for a personal trainer. There are a lot of different things that go into the mix, one of these being certifications. Be careful, however, because a certification obtained online does not necessarily mean they have worked, one-on-one, with a client. It also doesn’t indicate that they have done the work it takes to be qualified as a personal trainer. If someone pays $100 to take a class on the Internet that certainly does not indicate that they know how to work closely with a client. Be thorough in your search; learn what to look for and what questions to ask.

One quality you may not consider when looking for a personal trainer is their personality, but this is critical. You’ll want to match personalities as best you can. If you are an eager, driven kind of person, you’ll want that kind of a trainer, but if you are a calm, low key kind of person, you will probably want a trainer that is more on the easy-going side. Another important quality is to make sure they show up on time; remember, your time is valuable, so make sure, as your trainer, they honor that.

If you’re looking to hire a personal trainer, you can learn a lot by just watching them with other clients. Observe they way they instruct; watch the way they coach; listen to see whether or not they compliment their clients. You can learn a great deal just by watching. If you don’t like something, then keep looking for the right fit. There are as many trainers out there as there are fitness facilities, so keep searching for the one who’ll mesh best with you and your needs.
