How to Eat Healthy Food When Traveling

It is easy to grab a burger, slice of pizza, or bag of chips and a soda when you’re going through a service station, walking through the airport, or waiting in the train station. That makes travel not only stressful, but extremely unhealthy. Here are some good tips for eating healthy when you’re on the go.

The first rule is to make sure you bring something you can snack on if there are absolutely no healthy options available. This includes sliced vegetables if you have a way to keep them cool. If you’re on a road trip, pack the cooler with baby carrots, sliced peppers, and celery for a satisfyingly crunchy snack. If you don’t have a way to keep vegetables cool, you can pack a healthy protein bar, trail mix, raw almonds, apples, or bananas to have in case you need them.

It may sound risky, but drink more water than you usually do when you travel. You may have to stop at the restroom more, but it is worth it as water will help you stay full longer, it will help you battle jet lag, and will help you recover from the trip more easily. Dehydration is a common occurrence in travelers. It makes you sluggish, sickly, and can cause stomach upset. Staying properly hydrated and avoiding caffeine is a big step toward healthy traveling.

It is a good idea to research a restaurant ahead of time, if you know ahead of time where you’ll be eating. That way you can figure out what cooking methods they use and you can pre-plan what you’re going to order based on the healthy choices offered. Don’t rely on a menu to tell you something is healthy. Go ahead and do the research if you can. Sometimes a restaurant will boast that a dish is only 7 grams of fat, but it turns out that the nutritional information is per serving, and the dish you ordered is actually the equivalent of three servings. All of the sudden you’re eating 21 grams of fat instead of the 7 you think you’re having.

If you cannot research ahead of time, use common sense to make the right choices ordering in restaurants. Order vegetable dishes prepared without butter, like steamed vegetables, or salads without dressing. If you must have dressing, go for a balsamic vinaigrette option that is low fat, rather than the mayonnaise based dressings like ranch, thousand island, and bleu cheese.

Finally, if you’re in a situation where a meal is being served to you, like on an airplane, and the meal is not healthy, eat the healthiest bits first. That means eat the vegetables first. Drink plenty of water, and eat slowly. The idea is to let the vegetables and water fill you up as much as possible before you start the unhealthy bits of the meal. That way you eat less, and you eat less of the unhealthy stuff. If the food the airline serves is totally inedible, this is a good time to fall back on the snack you packed.
