How to do a Plie Squat

Reinforcing the butt can be difficult, particularly as a woman. Many of the machines are built for huge guys and they can be difficult and overweighted. And, women aren’t looking to build big, muscly upper legs, they want slim legs and a lifted butt. Yes, squats and lunges with limited reps and weights will get you there but the plie squat will give you that additional boost. The plie squat is a dancer’s secret to a strong, toned lower body. Begin to do this move and you’ll see and feel a difference!

As with many workout moves, this exercise will get your booty toned in no time. Make sure to take it nice and easy at first and then add weight and reps as you get more comfortable. Doing this routine just a few times a week and you are going to get the booty you want in no time flat!

To do the plie squat:

Start standing tall. Place the feet out wide, toes pointing away from the body. Place the hands on hips or hold a weight. Keep the upper body tall and roll the shoulders down and back. The neck is neutral and you’re looking forward. Squeeze the stomach to keep you balanced. Lower yourself in to a squat. Breathe. Come back up to the starting position. Repeat 10 times. Work up to doing 3 sets of 10.

Coach Tips:

As you practice, you will be able to lower yourself further as your strength and flexibleness increases. Don’t let the butt drop below the knees. Keep the weight in the heels of the feet and keep those toes turned out but do it at the hips and not the knees. Also ensure to engage the butt on the way up. Do not let the butt relax – if it is sticking out behind you, then tuck it under you!

Doing the plie squats works the bottom and upper legs. It also challenges the body to keep the belly scooped in and the shoulders and chest tall. This move is inspired by the plie moves done by ballet dancers. If you want to make the move more difficult, you can do it while lifting up on to your toes. This will give the calves a massive workout!
